Applications of nuclear energy
The main effect that the radiation has on the O-Ring compounds, as described in the previous chapters, is that of modifying the molecule links and, consequently the elasticity. In addition, the contact with water and water vapours (fluids often used in this type of applications) require that compound is constant in characteristics up to 200°C. The most indicated elastomer base for the realisation of suitable compounds for this particular type of applications proves to be the EPDM, in which the molecular chain present in its own make up show a length inferior to that of other elastomers, therefore, less influential by the radiation and by high temperatures.
